Both parents are responsible for financially supporting their children. Minnesota uses an “income shares model” to determine each parent’s obligation to provide financial support to their children. Child support is based primarily upon each parent’s income and the amount of time each parent spends with the child, along with several other factors. Child support may be modified if there has been a substantial change in circumstances that renders the existing child support order unreasonable or unfair. Changed circumstances could include increased or decreased earnings of a parent, a change in parenting time or custody schedules, a subsequent born child, or emancipation of a child.
